Mentors spend at least one or two hours a week with their assigned "mentee" for a year. We provide training and support, fun activities and ideas, and an eager child; you develop a friendship that can last a lifetime.

Mentor Commitments
Complete the application process and the pre-match training.
Spend at least one or two hours each week for at least a year with your mentee.
Contact the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program staff for the first three months regarding the progress of your relationship, and submit monthly mentor reports.
Contact and/or visit your mentee’s school during the first three months.
Contact your mentee’s referral agent during the first three months and be responsive if they need to contact you.
Visit your mentee’s home and invite her/him to your home for a visit during the first three months. If appropriate, invite your mentee to visit your workplace to learn more about your job.
Meet with your mentee and the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program staff after three months for a Friendship Review Meeting.
Attend one Life Skills Workshop with your mentee. (The program will set this up for you.)
Attend at least three Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program group activities with your mentee over the year.
Attend at least two additional mentor trainings or mixers during the year. (There will be one gathering each month.)
Develop a Mentee Action Plan (MAP) with your mentee and support his or her efforts to accomplish it.
Complete a community service project with your mentee. (The program will offer this opportunity or you can do it on your own.)
Meet with your mentee and the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program staff for an anniversary or graduation meeting.
Have FUN with your mentee and enjoy the relationship!
Mentor Application Process
Receive an orientation. Call the program staff for an appointment or information on upcoming orientations.
Sign up for an interview, which takes place at our office with a follow-up safety check at your home.
Submit a completed application which includes:
The application form
Three character references
A current negative tuberculosis test
Proof of auto insurance
Fingerprint and DMV clearance - done at Calaveras County Office of Education
Attend the required volunteer training.
After you have submitted your completed application or at any time during the mentor training, the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program Selection Committee will make its decision whether to accept your application. The decision reached by the Selection Committee is final. Reasons for accepting or rejecting an application are confidential. If your application is accepted, the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program staff will notify you of a potential match as soon as possible.

The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is administered by the Calaveras County Office of Education

funded by grants, individual community members, and local businesses and service organizations.
